Praise for DESCENDANT:

“A hot new spin on paranormal, Descendant is refreshingly imaginative and powerful. I can’t decide which was best — piecing together Abby’s sinister past or keeping up with her heartbreaking future. If you like your YA laced with melt-my-heart romance and a good helping of heart-pounding suspense, you’ll love this book!” — Michelle Davidson Argyle, author of The Breakaway

“Nichole Giles has crafted a story that breathes from the pages. Her characters are authentic, the action intense, with powerful emotions that will keep Descendant on your mind long after the book ends. Open your eyes to another facet of our world in Descendant and you’ll be sucked into an adventure with Abby and Kye, that will explore the power of gifts, courage, and love. With top-notch writing, Giles has crafted a story that breathes from the pages.” –Rachelle J. Christensen, award-winning author of Wrong Number and Caller ID
“Nichole Giles brings a fresh new voice and flawless writing technique to the world of Young Adult fiction. I was swept away to another place and never wanted to come back.” –Tristi Pinkston, author of Turning Pages and the Secret Sisters mystery series

Johnny’s plans fly out the window when he finds out his single mother is leaving town for the summer. She has a breakthrough job in upstate New York. He can live with his Aunt Collette but only on the condition that he “help out with” his autistic older cousin, Remember. Yup, you heard it right: Remember Dippy. That’s his cousin’s name — and Remember is a gawky awkward kid with some pretty strange habits, like repeating back almost everything Johnny says and spending hours glued to the weather channel. Johnny’s premonitions of disaster appear at first to come to cringe-worthy fruition, but when the two boys save a bully from drowning, salvage the pizzeria guy’s romance, and share girl troubles, Johnny ends up having the summer of his life.
TWEET ABOUT IT
REMEMBER DIPPY is a story of 2 teen cousins, one with autism, the summer they spend together & the trials both young men must face.

MY THOUGHTS
Reading REMEMBER DIPPY was a refreshing change of pace for me. Although I haven’t read many fiction stories where one of the main characters has autism, I know real life children/adults with it. So the thing I liked most about this book was it’s realistic look at the effects of autism. Remember (or Mem, as Johnny calls him) is higher functioning on the autism scale in that he can talk and read, but his understanding of things, social interactions, etc., are affected by the autism.

I really really liked the main character, Johnny. He resents being stuck with Mem for the summer and really just wants to be able to hang out with his friends. But with Mem in the picture, this changes how Johnny spends his summer, and by the end of the book, it has changed his perspective a lot.

While readers don’t get to hear from Remember directly, I think his character, as told through the eyes of Johnny, is very true to real-life autism. I like how he made an impact on Johnny, most likely unknowingly, during the summer the two spent together. Their time together changes Johnny for the better and it also solidifies his relationship with Mem as not just a family member, but as a true friend as well.

OVERALL
REMEMBER DIPPY is a great middle grade/young adult crossover book. It’s an engaging story about a young man spending the summer with his autistic cousin and the adventures and hardships they face. The family relationships expressed are genuine and well developed. The message and moral of the story is something all tweens/teens should be exposed to, yet it is not shoved down the throat of the reader.

REMEMBER DIPPY is a story that I will not soon forget and I recommend it as something parents should read with their children.

Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them…starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous–everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.

This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

Forbidden love, intoxicating power, and the terror of control…

Raine has always been a good girl. She lives by the rules in Freedom. After all, they are her father’s rules: He’s the Director. It’s because of him that Raine is willing to use her talent—a power so dangerous, no one else is allowed to know about it. Not even her roommate, Vi.

All of that changes when Raine falls for Gunner. Raine’s got every reason in the world to stay away from Gunn, but she just can’t. Especially when she discovers his connection to Vi’s boyfriend, Zenn. Raine has never known anyone as heavily brainwashed as Vi. Raine’s father expects her to spy on Vi and report back to him. But Raine is beginning to wonder what Vi knows that her father is so anxious to keep hidden, and what might happen if she helps Vi remember it. She’s even starting to suspect Vi’s secrets might involve Freedom’s newest prisoner, the rebel Jag Barque…
Luke Bates was devastated when Mallory left him for the city life. He managed to pull himself together and move on, even if only just barely. When Mallory shows up in town, Luke vows to stay away from her at all costs. So why does he keep checking in on her and her father, showing up when he’s clearly uninvited? Maybe Luke isn’t as ‘over her’ as he thought.

Joclyn is in hiding, hunted by the man she still desperately loves. Ryland is gone, his mind erased, no memory of Joclyn remains. But, Joclyn’s heart desperately begs her to hold out hope. While, in reality the black eyed monster that possesses him, attempts to kill her over and over.

If it wasn’t for Ilyan, Joclyn would be dead by now.

Ilyan. The man who once stalked her, is now Joclyn’s protector, the only thing she has left. He protects Joclyn from the men who seek to end her life, and while she is haunted by dreams where Ryland begs her to break the bond between them.
Ilyan is there. Always there.

Ilyan trains and prepares her, teaching her everything she needs to know in the hope that one day she can avenge Ryland, if not protect herself from him.

And then there is her father.

The man who has never been there, is suddenly responsible for everything. And who he is has made Joclyn into something she never wanted to be.

Here’s a sneak peek at NEVER LET YOU FALL:

“What do you feel? Anything strange?”

She flung her hands up in the air as she answered me. “Yes, I feel something strange! This whole thing is strange!”

Placing my finger on her lips, I shook my head in frustration. “Skye, what do you feel here?” I asked again, pointing to her chest. “How do you feel?”

She stood for a moment with her lips lightly pressed to my finger, slowly closing and reopening her eyes. There was a sheen to them that spoke of unshed tears, and as she raised her hand to pull mine away from her mouth, I saw her fingers tremble when she whispered, “I can’t deal with this, Xander.”

“Yes, Skye – you can and you will,” I warned her. “This is going to happen whether you want it to or not. I told you that I’m safe, and I…”

Skye broke into hysterical laughter at that. “Safe? You’re telling me that a legion of demons is after me and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. How in your book does that equal safe?”

“You don’t know me, Skye, and you don’t know Rioden and… what we can do. I told you that I
would protect you, and I will.”

Shaking her head, she took a small step back and admitted, “You’re right about one thing, Xander,” as she wiped a tear from her face. “I don’t know you, so how can I trust you? No
matter how you make me feel. Please just leave me alone.” She spun on her heel and sprinted away, leaving me to stare after her.

AUTHOR BIO:
Having grown up in both the cold, quiet town of Topsham, Maine and the steamy, southern hospitality of Mobile, Alabama, Michele is something of a enigma.

She is an avid Yankees fan, loves New England, being outdoors and misses snow. However she thinks southern boys are hotter, Alabama football is the only REAL football out there and sweet tea is the best thing this side of heaven and her children’s laughter!

Her family, a doting husband and three awesome minions have planted their roots in the middle of Michele’s two childhood homes in
Charlotte, North Carolina.

NEVER LET YOU FALL is Michele’s first novel and she is beyond thrilled to have finally followed up on a dream she has held for over 20 years!

God willing there will be many many more books to follow.

The second day of TXLA has come to an end. It’s been a busy and tiring first two days, but I have had a great time so far. I’ve met some new bloggers, spoken with librarians and teachers, and interacted with authors, publicists and marketing folks. Not to mention the books I’ve seen and those I am bringing home with me.

Here’s me with P.J. Hoover, the author of SOLSTICE, expected to release on 18 June 2013 from TOR TEEN/MACMILLAN

Since this is my first year at TXLA, I don’t know how this year compares to past conferences, but I do have to say that compared to Book Expo America (BEA), it was a little more organized in terms of author signings. There were clearly designated areas for each author and plenty of room to form waiting lines. Also the waiting lines were roped off, so there was less chance of confusion among those looking to join signing queues.

I also found that the staff manning the booths were more willing to spend time with attendees, helping them to find books appropriate to their grade levels and genre interests. That’s not to say publisher staff at BEA weren’t willing to do this, only that the books weren’t just set out to be taken at TLA, there was interaction to find books with the right fit.

Because I flew here, I’ve made several trips to the post office (thank God there is one located only a few block from the convention center venue) to mail my books home. Unfortunately, I failed to take any pictures of them before they were packed and shipped. So I’ll be doing a final wrap up post once I receive them and can snap some photos.

I did however, keep a few books with me that looked super interesting. I’ve already started to read both, and now have the dilemma of deciding which to finish first. The first one is THE BROKENHEARTED by Amelia Kahaney and the second is FIND ME by Romily Bernard. THE BROKENHEARTED is expected to release on 8 October 2013 by Harper Teen and FIND ME is expected to release on 24 September 2013 by Harper Teen. Here’s a look at the two books:

Prima ballerina Anthem Fleet is closely guarded by her parents in their penthouse apartment. But when she meets the handsome Gavin at a party on the wrong side of town, she is immediately drawn into his dangerous world. Then, in a tragic accident, Anthem falls to her death. She awakes in an underground lab, with a bionic heart ticking in her chest. As she navigates her new life, she uncovers the sinister truth behind those she trusted the most, and the chilling secret of her family lineage…and her duty to uphold it.

The Dark Knight meets Cinder in this gripping and cinematic story of heartbreak and revenge. From Alloy Entertainment, this inventive new superhero story is sure to captivate any reader.

<right></right>

“Find Me.” These are the words written on Tessa Waye’s diary. The diary that ends up with Wick Tate. But Tessa’s just been found…dead.

Wick has the right computer-hacking skills for the job, but little interest in this perverse game of hide-and-seek. Until her sister Lily is the next target. Then Griff, trailer-park boy next door and fellow hacker, shows up, intent on helping Wick.

Is a happy ending possible with the threat of Wick’s deadbeat dad returning, the detective hunting him sniffing around Wick instead, and a killer taunting her at every step?

Foster child. Daughter of a felon. Loner hacker girl. Wick has a bad attitude and sarcasm to spare.

But she’s going to find this killer no matter what.

Because it just got personal.

They both sound good, don’t they? You can see my problem… .

Alright, time for me to go. Tomorrow is the final day of TXLA and it’s a short day, only till noon, but there are a few author signings I want to attend and I want to stop by any booths I may have missed.
